Tunisia was a candidate for early elimination, but the Carthage Eagles pulled a surprise over neighbours Algeria to win 2-0 and set up themselves for qualification.
These two sides will set the tone for the qualification stage, where intense action is set to be witnessed. Burkina Faso had a sterling group display, garnering 5 points to finish top of the group above Cameroon, hosts Gabon and Guinea-Bissau. Tunisia on the other hand finished second in their group with 6 points to earn a fifth AFCON quarter finals ticket.
The Stallions, will be making a 3rd AFCON appearance, and will look to extend their dominance over the Eagles. This will also be a third meet between these two sides, and Tunisia will be seeking an elusive victory. In all competitive matches played against Burkina Faso, Tunisia is yet to taste victory.
Tunisia’s opening loss to Senegal exposed them badly, but their final match against Zimbabwe revealed their claws, when in fine form. Burkina Faso has showed consistency and played exceptionally well in the recent ties. On the FIFA rankings, they sit above Tunisia, and it will take something really exceptional from them to win.
However, this will be a well contested tie. Both sides will come out hard on each other, and we expect a draw in regular time, with Burkina Faso coming out on top in extra time.
