Cheche lifts NASL Trophy with New York Cosmos

No ‘tarmacking’ for Kenyan international

Kenyan international defender David Ochieng Cheche will not be looking for another ‘home’ to settle in as his North American Soccer League (NASL) side New York Cosmos is finding its feet once again with a new owner.

Cheche and his teammates saw their contracts terminated last year due to financial problems the club was facing but now it has been handed a new lifeline with cable TV entrepreneur Rocco B. Commisso purchasing the club, Big Apple Soccer reports.

Beyond zero

Speaking to the media on Tuesday 10 January 2017, Head Coach Giovanni Savarese noted that the team now has a lot to do given the fact that most of the players have already found new clubs with only three players who remain under contract; defender David Ochieng, defender Ryan Richter, who converted the game-winning penalty kick in the shootout to clinch the NASL title for the Cosmos, and Eric Carvilho.

-We are not starting from zero. We are starting from minus five. Commisso has given the confidence to me and my staff to rebuild the team. We're not going to do anything different than we've done before. Unfortunately, with the transition, some players have moved on. Right now we have to rebuild everything. Everything happened so quickly in the last few days. The team was on the edge of not existing, he said during a Tuesday conference call.

The coach also noted that he was talking to some players about returning. However, six players already have found new teams; League MVP Juan Arango, who signed to play for Zulia FC in his native Venezuela, midfielder Danny Szetela, who has joined the NASL expansion side San Francisco Deltas and forwards Lucky Mkosana and Jairo Arrieta, who inked deals with teams in Finland and Costa Rica (Herediano), respectively.
